I disagree, some people have more expendable money than they do time, if I had the time, I might make my own, as it stands I'm buying kit ready made.
Not everyone is able for DIY beyond wiring a plug.
Also the professionally finished stuff is just that, professionally finished, my DIY efforts would look like crap to be honest, I'd also need to buy a whole new set of tools, a drill worth buying plus holesaws are gonna cost the guts of 500....I'd rather buy the ready made kit. Also plastic DIY vs Stainless pro kit, no contest in my mind.
Horses for courses.

I was not impressed with the brupaks mash tun I saw and I have heard others complain about it too. It seems like someone described a mashtun so someone else who built it but never tried to brew a batch on it. There are too few slots in the manifold, which is too close to the sides and the pipe connecting it to the spigot can fall out during the mash.

Hop and grape seem to make their own and I have heard that they are good. This bloke [url:1z7dedvj]http://brewd00d.com[/url:1z7dedvj] makes mash tuns with PVC manifolds and they look pretty good and at a decent price. Not sure what shipping from the US would cost though.

Aha i see the Avid diye'r in you, from personal experience in the home improvement/diy trade, people tend to be either too lazy or too afraid to do most diy type jobs and will buy pre-made or get someone else to do it, even if it costs them double a lot of people just want the job done right first time and are afraid to get involved.

Edit: Damn customers making me late with my post

That price might be a little over enthusiastic, a good quality drill from someone like AEG and a High Grade Holesaw Set should cost you more in the region of €200.

When I get a mashtun I'll be getting the mashing version of the 75l boiler that I have, Joe at leyland said it'll set me back about 250 sterling, going for a setup like philrobins, in my mind it's the only way to go.
Not that I have more money than sense, but I'll end up with a lifetime job even if it takes me over a year to get the necessary cash together to pay for it, long term commitment so it's allowed to take me a while to sort out. <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->
