Malt Crusher And Cheap Grain 15 years 5 days ago #43

Its looking like we will be able to retail an adjustable hand cranked mill for about Euro 70, if it all works out. Its going to be June.

But I suppose we should really try them out first. We need an expert tester.

I don't know about expert testers, but how about arranging to demo it at one of the Beoir get togethers...

The two possible ways I have to see this happen would be for someone from HBW to come up to one of the Beoir meet ups and bring some uncrushed grain and the grinder and give everyone a go, or pick someone from Beoir and send them the crusher and some grain to bring along and give everyone a go.

I understand reviews are helpful, but you cant beat trying something out before you buy it...

Good stuff - will there be any "attach it to a drill" option?

Brian, I have some malt there that I need to mill shortly. I'd be more than happy to test a mill for you and give some feedback on it. I'd test it and give any feedback wanted.
I'd not call myself an expert but I can certainly mill the grain and then make a call on it dependent on my efficiencies matched with that which I have been getting from premilled grains. I can then also brew the beer and let you know how it turned out, or even get feedback from a meeting of the Beoir crowd at one of the meetings, but that would be hard before June due to the timescales involved, it's a bit tight on time presently.

HBW, is the mill we're talking about here a proper roller mill that can be attached to a drill, or one of these corona style grinders <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="www.hopandgrape.com/public/detailv1.asp?itemcode=CAS20184458">www.hopandgrape.com/public/detai ... AS20184458 ?

If the latter, I wouldn't bother. I have heard they are not great, also if you need to grind any more than about a kg at a time it's just not worth it by hand. You can get the Crankandstein mill from the US for around 120 including shipping, it's a great machine, so you'd need to compete with that, and a hand crank grinder can't really compete with that

You say 120 from the US, does that include a drill and a hopper and a mount?
I'd daresay that even that hand crank is better than nothing.
Can anyone confirm that a handheld cordless drill will have enough power and juice to run through a 15KG grain bill?
Personally I'd rather not burn out my cordless trying something like this, mains powered drills are surely the way to go?
