Malt Crusher And Cheap Grain 15 years 3 months ago #1

Hi guys,
I thought I'd run this idea by you before we invest heavily in it.

In the UK, the MaltMiller is doing well . . . its a great story with freshly crushed grain to order.

Although the UK is becoming a significant part of our business, we can't compete with the MaltMiller on these terms . . . the cost of crushing the grain to order? We are the best value site in the UK for loads of products (brewsmarter.co.uk).

We are by far the largest supplier in Ireland, for good reasons. Many of them attributable to people on the older version of this site, who guided us on our way . . .ICB.

So, if we do an all grain solution, it will have to be the best, here and also in the UK, or we just won't do it.

Our idea is to go one step further, and supply uncrushed grain. And a crusher at a great price. So that you get the freshest possible grain.

Here is big the question:
- if we can get you a high quality precision engineered German crusher with an RRP of 360 for a cost price of, say 250, then:
- would you be prepared to invest in this so that you can order uncrushed whole grain from us at about 1.45 euros per kilo?

If it works here, then it will work for us in the UK too which will allow us to order hundreds of crushers and make the numbers work.

Uncrushed Maris Otter 25kg @ 36.25euro? I'm in.

Many of us have some sort of grain mill already and would certainly prefer better taste and aroma that comes from [b:2x8qfdhw]freshly[/b:2x8qfdhw] crushed grain. Especially when it comes to specialty grain, from my experience loosing these fairly quickly when stored crushed. Considering the amounts of i.e. black malt I'm using, I need the best storage solution even for 0,5kg packages... I can't finish one for more than 8 months now <!-- s:-) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":-)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:-) -->

I already have a crusher, but would definitely be interested in uncrushed grain. I got my mill in the US for about $80, so €250 seems a lot, even if it is very high quality. Is it adjustable for different sizes of grain? I'm not sure how many takers you would get at that price though. My crusher is not adjustable, so it's a sod to crush wheat malt, so I am going to get another one when I am back in the US next month, so I will have a basic one that I will put in the market square.

I think existing mill owners will want un-crushed grain, but not sure how many mills you will sell at $250.

That's just my opinion anyway.

Cheers,
Billy.

Uncrushed grain is one of the few things that are still not available from the local suppliers so I would welcome it. Also I don't think anyone supplies grain mills locally at the moment.

Price of the grain sounds good.

Regarding the grain mill, maybe you could look at the Crank and Stein mills from the US:

A lot of people swear by them here and in the US.

sounds like a good price for the grain... but the crusher seems expensive. Im sure its a good deal compared to the RRP but the price is still too big to justify buying it - for most people.

Be interested in the grain but not the crusher at that price. If you can get a reasonably good crusher for around 100 that would be ideal! Best of luck and fair play to you for trying!
