Cork brewpubs - what a disappointment! 14 years 8 months ago #7

Lots of valid points, tho I think you're a little hard on the FW. I've never been to the Bierhaus.

I agree that €4.90 for a pint of house beer is too much. €4 is closer to the mark.

Re Messrs, while I love the place and would rank it as one of my favourite pubs of all time, I wouldn't see it as the epitome of the brewpub (but it could be). Staff don't know enough about their own beer (sometimes they don't seem to know anything) and the food is too expensive.

And Porter House on Parliament St is a bit of a victim of being in Temple Bar. The touristy bit seems to take priority over the fantastic beers.

The only other PH I've been in is Bray. A few months ago I had an interesting conversation:
Me: Do you have any Hophead?
Staff member: Sorry?
Me: Do you have any Hophead?
Staff member: Do you mean Heineken?

So I suppose the moral of the story is that there is no such thing as the perfect pub, but at least some are trying!

I think there's the issue, that and expecting the pubs to be your ideal. They are both quirky bars, quirky is good!

As a Dub who has been living in the rebel county for some time I think you might just have had a bad experience. More's the pity, as the Bierhaus had a Belgian tripel and a dubbel on draft this weekend.

A re-occuring theme running in this thread appears to be that any pub is only as good as its barmen, which I wholeheartly agree. After my last failed attempt to get a berry weiss at Messrs I suggested to someone that maybe they should colour code the barmen- a green shirt means "I'm fully knowledgable about our entire range of beers" and a white shirt means "Sell Guinness, Guinness good.".
