Cork brewpubs - what a disappointment! 14 years 8 months ago #13

I'm not sure where to start with this but from a personal point of view, Cork city is one place where I would go [i:2wn173zc]just[/i:2wn173zc] to drink beer. I have found the Well to be very quiet one time I was there, but that is hardly their fault, is it? Maybe they should do food, but I am not sure about their space for a kitchen etc. But I would find it hard to believe they charged you €4.90 for a pint of house beer; I never thaught it was expensive but couldn't say what price I was charged there lat time I visited.

I have always found the Bierhaus to be a grand spot and have enjoyed brews on tap and in bottle that are available almost nowhere else. Maybe their promised new place will tempt you back.

I have also enjoyed Franciscan Well beers in Bodega bar and the Mutton Lane Inn while in the city.

I feel you just had an bad experience due to timing/situation/bad luck etc. I note that you were so pee'd off that you didn't go back to the Bierhaus. It's a pity you could not bring yourself to give it another try.

I hope you will at some point in the future and not write off Cork as a beer destination.

John (from Dublin).

This is my first day seeing this thread and I am indeed surprised with some of your observations.

Firstly you had a problem with service in the Bierhaus – Dave the owner has acknowledged this on this site and has offered to make amends.

Secondly re your experience in the Franciscan Well I think you will agree that your opinion re Rebel Red was a bit over the top. I think you were probably overcharged in error. I think the price of a pint in the Well is 4.50 at max.. I don’t think you would have been overcharged there on purpose. I always find the staff there very friendly and helpful and am surprised with your findings. I think your mood may have been influenced by your experience in the Bierhaus firstly and the beer you did not like in the Well also. .

Sunday afternoon is always a quiet time in both bars – probably more so on a bank holiday week-end.

As a regular patron of both venues thankfully I think your experiences are not shared by too many people. I have often met visitors from far and near who had a great time in both bars and only had very good things to say about both bars. The F.Well opens at 3 pm. and the Bierhaus at 4 each day. Perhaps if you come again you might visit a bit later. You missed some great Belgian beers on draught in the Bierhaus last week-end – see Cork Bierhaus Belgian beerfest in the Events section of this site.

I have had some negative experiences in some craft beer pubs before but nothing that I felt I would want to go on a rant here about.

The Well and The Bierhaus are in my opinion and indeed in many more people’s opinions two great bars and bars which the people of Cork and further afield should be very proud of supporting.

Hopefully we might see you in Cork again sometime!!!!!

Dissappointing to see a thread like this. I like both bars very much , the things I could highlight about each ( the Bierhaus has an excellent music policy, which always lifts me in there , the beer selection is boggling and I have never experienced bad service there and the crowd is always the best mix of old soaks and exotic blow ins .
The Well I have loved for the entire, what, 15 years it's been open , ( I proposed to my wife outside it ) and I have always loved their beers . ) It's sad to see someone having a bad experience when visiting these bars .

what I will say is , you cannot really judge any bar by 5 o clock on a Sunday when they've just opened , and say there was no-one in there.

I'd query the 4.90 for the rebel red , it's 4.50 AFAIK , and I would say that the North mall is in no way a desolate deserted part of the town . It's just an area that isn't filled with shops , but is seriously no more than 2 mins from a main thoroughfare . And is the beginning of the scenic Lee walkway .

In comparison with the Dublin Bars , I like the Porterhouse , I've enjoyed good nights there , Messrs I only went to once and didn't stay . The Bull and Castle was definitely my favourite . All very different bars to the Bierhaus and The Well though .

If I'm honest, I'm stumped by your assessment , as the only thing I can say is fair about it is that yes , there is a known issue with the toilet in the Well . It's one that is difficult to resolve .

And yes it is dark in the pub , but if you knew the history of the bar part of it , it might make a little more sense .

I will be, with great interest, visiting the two bars in September.

Interesting to acknowledge that Irish are just like the Brazilians about quiet bars: We both don't like it...

About me, I like a 'craic' (above all with good live trad. music), but I appreciate quiet and dark public houses as well. I will certainly enjoy a lonely, lazy, Sunday afternoon in the old Franciscan friary!

About Tube's argument on the staffs knowing nothing 'bout the beers they sell: I will be an unemployed waiter, and Irish beer (and culture) lover, from next week on. Please hire me! <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

It's funny- but I've always assumed I've never drunk in the Franciscan Wells but from the descriptions here, I know I had a great night there once. Found the place purely by chance. Empty but with a number of beers I'd never heard of before (though can't remember them now). There where 5 of us in the bar but it was a great night.
