Cork brewpubs - what a disappointment! 14 years 8 months ago #55

As a member who happens to be from Cork, I find the views expressed by my local fellow members extremely embarrassing and the notion of threatening to leave Beoir over an opinion expressed on a discussion forum is way over the top. It displays Cork people as tribal and having a serious persecution complex - I'd like to think that I, and many other Cork people, are not like that.

It is ridiculous and retrograde to suggest that any bar is beyond criticism because they sell craft beer. All businesses need criticism and feedback in order to develop and improve.

In my opinion The FW would benefit hugely from refurbished toilets and some décor changes - I just don't like the atmosphere in the main bar area but, clearly, lots of people have no problem with it.

And while I don't agree with the OP's points on The BH's decor, Dave himself thanked the OP for pointing out the shortfall in service (it happens sometimes in any bar).

I love The Abbot's but I'm not about to have a hissy fit if someone criticises it.

So come on guy's get out of the box you've put yourselves in and accept that, even in Cork, some things can be improved and criticism is no bad thing.

This thread got out of hand it seems.

I love the Bierhaus and the Well but some of the comments may have been justified. They can also be applied to any pub in Dublin.

I have heard many people complain about the toilets in the B&C being too small (they are) and Porterhouse Temple Bar being horrible (don't agree). Mulligans toilets are even smaller. I don't think much can be done as these are limitations in the old buildings.

The Porterhouse is sometimes impossible to order a beer as it gets too packed.

B&C plays music too loud at night.

These are all criticisms that people have voiced on this forum and in person. I don't see them going out of business any time soon and we love them despite the minor issues.

Everywhere has some minor issue. I left Against the grain on my birthday when it got too full and moved across the road to The Village where it was much more relaxed but ordinarily I love against the grain. I just wanted something quieter that evening and being a Saturday night, it was to be expected. I was quite surprised by the village but someone else going in there might consider it dead with no atmosphere... It later filled up as well. The point is, as a first time visitor to The Village, my perception might have been different depending on when I went in, and what my expectations were.

No where is perfect but constructive criticism should not only be allowed, it should be encouraged.

The only thing that bothers me about the original post was the title and also the tone somewhat but what it contained was just an opinion.

Mark, I suggest you get yourself down there again and meet up with Ger and the lads and have a few drinks. I think the atmosphere will be somewhat better with a few like-minded people around.

If any of you are Liverpool fans and go to Anfield for a match you wont ever complain about toilets again, most of the buildings around the area are in a poor state, some derelict, there is a pub that seems to only open for match day and the toilets are the worst I have ever seen. The urinals start from the floor and ends at the ceiling ,with so many people drinking watered down lager it appears the routine is to start weeing at the door(line on the left) and follow the guy in front as you proceed in a circle ,you are usually finished by the time you have reached the door and exit(line on the right).

Haven’t been on the site much in the last few days – very close friend who had been unwell for past two years passed away last Thursday and I do not have a pc at home at present (old one died so have not replaced it yet) so access to the net is limited (sneaking on at work now and again!).

Just a few comments re what hopefully be my final comments on this thread

I certainly do not want to give the impression that the Franciscan Well and Bierhaus are beyond criticism. I felt the original post was very unbalanced and the tone in same I felt certainly wasn’t good or fair. Nowhere is perfect and some bars, even if they have limitations in certain respects, still have some charm, appeal or positive points but there was nothing at all positive about both bars in the original post.

In regard to Saruman’s suggestion re perhaps Mark meeting up when he next comes to Cork – at the same time as putting up this post I am also sending him a pm to this effect. Through this hopefully we can build bridges and hopefully he will have a better experience barwise on his next trip to Cork.

Glad to see that some others of you have had positive experiences on your visits to the Well and Bierhaus. While the Well and Bierhaus are the main two craft beer bars in Cork craft beers are also available in a good few other bars including The Abbots Alehouse, Bodege, Crane Lane, Mutton Lane, The Oval, amongst others.
