Cork brewpubs - what a disappointment! 14 years 8 months ago #25

I would not like us to be in a situation where people felt they couldn't complain about a business. That said, the place to complain about a business is [b:22g11s8j]to the business, not on an internet forum[/b:22g11s8j].

I think this thread shows that fans of Irish craft beer do enjoy drinking in the pubs mentioned, and also that both of them take their customer service seriously enough to watch and respond to this thread.

This site was set up to promote craft beer in pubs, not for someone who was on a bad day, to complain.

mark the bush man is a recent member who did not what his style of beer, an Irish red ale . All new members are welcome, but just because you had a bad day took it out on the pubs visited.

Normally I would totally disagree with rebel on this point, but say when someone does a google search and this page is linked to. How many people will read past the first post to find that all others have had pretty much the opposite experience in these establishments.

Trying searching for places to drink in cork, maybe using the term: "cork brewpub", what is number two on the list? (This post in case you hadn't guessed)

I disagree with censorship personally... (in this case)

while everyone is entitled to their views, we could all slate some pub at some point. I would say to Mark to come down some time for one of the many festivals and he will get to experience 2 of the best bars in the land..and if he doesnt have a different opinion after that he must simply be banned him off the site and out of cork forever

Hi all,

I seem to have opened a right hornets nest here, totally unintentionally mind you! As I said from the start, I didnt mean to cause any offence or endanger anyone's livelihood.

I greatly appreciate both the owners of the 2 premises I visited actually taking the time to engage in the debate (for want of a better word) - something which many business owners wouldnt have the guts to do, and engaging in the debate is something that I respect these guys very much for. Not that anyone has suggested it (yet) but I wasnt looking for a freebie either, and the invititation expressed by the 2 different owners to revisit was very much appreciated and I will take them up on it - thanks guys! I just felt at the time I posted my first message that I had just wasted half a day finding these places and I didnt get what I was expecting, and as I wanted to give these pubs a fair crack of the whip, I asked if my experience was the norm, was I expecting too much etc... And as I am sure you will see from my subsequent post that I was beginning to see the bigger picture (bank holiday etc) and I have always kept an open mind.

I have to disagree with "rebel" though on a number of points. Regarding myself not knowing what kind of beer I was looking for, this is untrue. I would probably know more than any average barman would about beer styles, & how they're made in the first place. Secondly his assertion that I was having a bad day & that took it out on the pubs I visited is also very unfair. I said the toilets in the FW were in a bad need of a refurbishment and the place was very very dark, statements of fact - nothing to do with having a bad day. Surely the point of this forum is about DISCUSSING craft beer/bars etc - good points and bad. I also agree that the place to complain is not necessarily on a forum, but the objective of my post was not to complain/rant but was solely to seek advice on my experience. Also, I dont agree with what rebel has said regarding my comments but I am not calling for his post to be removed? I'm glad the mods have had the maturity to allow opinions to be expressed and to somewhat ignore the calls for heads to roll because it didnt suit a particular person/business. At least it was just myself who expressed an opinion, and not someone like the Sunday Worlds pub spy and published it in a national newspaper!

And yes, I could take my hard earned money elsewhere, (I do earn my money through hard work) but the reason why I go to pubs like the PH/Messrs as my regular haunts (and why I always give new brewpubs a try) on what few days available I have a month, is because I am 100% behind these places, I am 100% behind craft beer, and I would love to see brewpubs everywhere & see them succeed, because the average pub-goers of this country are literally slaves to the "big 3" monopoly and wouldnt know real beer if it hit them over the head!

Thanks again guys for the replies, again no offence intended to anyone and thanks to the 2 lads out of the Bierhaus/FW, I think I'll be buying you pair a few pints after opening this thread!

At this stage I agree with Rebel that this thread should be removed. Mark’s initial post / rant (despite what he says that is what it is) is very damaging to both bars especially the F.Well. As FranJ says most people will only read the first page and then move on with an impression in mind.

The Franciscan well has been a great supporter of the Irish Craft Beer movement and hosts its Easterfest each year which is the showcase festival for all Irish craft breweries. It has also facilitated Beoir members facilitating the Homebrew Expos to be held over the last three years offering its facilities with no charge whatever. Management and staff could not have been more accommodation to craft beer drinkers and home brewers. Local homebrewers have a very close relationship with the Franciscan Well and being do not wish to be associated with these comments

I think the Moderators of the site should think seriously about this one. The initial post, whatever Marks thinks, has caused a lot of hurt and offence to management and staff of both bars and I am certainly not at all happy with it either as it is most inaccurate and an abuse of the forum. For someone who only just joined the site, put in a few entries re kit brewing and then his opinions re the Bierhaus and Well without understanding the potential consequences of same is not acceptable in my opinion. As I said in earlier threads I have had some experiences in craft beer bars which were not perfect but I did not go straight to the net to go on a rant re same.

Again I think it is incumbent on the Officers of Beoir to review this thread and I strongly ask you to remove this thread.

I know if it is not removed I will have to consider whether I wish to remain a member of Beoir as this thread is damaging Irish Craft beer rather than supporting it.
