With the exception of Dunnes and Tesco in Rathmines, and possibly a few others, just about every supermarket in the land will have to remodel. So will hundreds of convenience stores and petrol stations and anywhere else you can pick up some drink and bring it to a cash register where you're allowed pay for other things as well.

I worked in a few off licenses and they were separate from the rest of the shop. In recent years though many places seem to have gotten off licenses that are not separated from the rest of the shop.
Having a separate offie will discourage those who pick up a couple of cans when they see them near the cheese but I don't think it'll discourage those who really want to drink.

So now we'll have to queue twice - once for food, and once for drink. So for a nice evening in with a bottle of wine and some cheese and olives, it will take you longer to actually get the supplies than you will spend consuming them. <!-- s:roll: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_rolleyes.gif" alt="" title="Rolling Eyes" /><!-- s:roll: --> Never mind if you want a cheap bottle of wine to use in a casserole or sauce...

The end result will be that most people will simply be inconvenienced, and that it'll have a minimal affect on whatever aims they're trying to achieve as regards under-age/binge drinking.

Has anyone heard a compelling argument that would suggest otherwise?
