A few more laws about fines, closure orders and underage selling that'll barely be enforced.

I guess it's better than some quick-fix draconian laws.

I see the old chestnut about off-licences having to print their name on cans/bottles got a mention in the report. For this to really work, beyond litter fines, surely the buyer should have to agree to having his/her name printed on the cans too, as once the alcohol leaves the premises it's out of the control of the off-licence.

There was an article in the Examiner last week, where teenagers came up with their suggestions, and they seemed a lot more forward thinking than this report. Obviously they were ignored because (a) they're only kids, and (b) they mentioned the dreaded [i:1srinhkf]café[/i:1srinhkf] word.

Oblivious, 10pm is probably the usual closing time of 'late night' shops around here anyway. The complete separation of the drinks section might be more of an issue with smaller shops, though.

I wouldn't like to be the guy in Garda Headquarters who's given the brief of setting up "voluntary labelling initiatives on a local basis".

True, I was just wondering if there will be any real policing of pubs sell off trade after 10pm?

An where the local shop it appears maybe have to renovate part of the shop to comply and be much more closely watched as to off sales trading times.

There are situations where it's advisable that people not only obey the law, but they obey it in a publicly verifiable way.
"My tax disc? It's in the glove compartment. Can I go now?"[/quote:33h5n64z]

And how much effort must the seller make to obey the law?
1. Ask for an ID
2. Check the id has the same biometric data as you have with a retinal scanner
3. Check the id biometric data and its tamperproofing.

How much faking are 17 year old agent provacteurs allowed when buying booze? Can they just ask for booze or are they allowed start using fake id's the way all the ones who are not gathering evidence do? If they are not allowed to start faking id's they will be easily spotted. If they are it seems to be getting a bit hard on the off-licence.

Doubtless the practice of buying cans at closing time will remain a feature of pub life. Except, in its new illicit form, it will be known as a "lock-out".[/quote:sggwpvf1]
"Prove that I didn't buy them at 21:58 and ask the barman to leave them in the fridge until I left. That money I just paid over right now? Oh that was for the last round of drinks I bought for on-site consumption - he didn't have change earlier....."
