Point taken about The Herald, normally wouldn't wipe my arse with it, but the story is more a less accurate and was also related in the broadsheets. Didn't have the time to go looking for the links to the other papers.

None of this was ever about curbing binge drinking. Not really.

The government have to be seen to do something, but they don't want a drop in revenue from alcohol sales either. Hell, tax revenue is down already, do you think they want to make things worse? What they really want is to have their friends on the VAI and LVA increase their market share at the expense of the offies and supermarkets.

Most of this nonsense is to help the publicans, but it's about as well thought out as every other piece of alcohol legislation in this country, so it won't work.

The VAI and LVA blame the smoking ban, the offies and the supermarkets for the drop in sales in pubs. Now, they can't do anything about the smoking ban, but they think that making it less convenient for people to get takeout will drive people back to the local. The problem is that offies and supermarkets are beating them on price, not convenience. People are drinking at home because drinks bought in an offie are a fraction of the price in a pub would charge. This is not because of below cost selling or anything else, it is because the pubs have been raising their prices way ahead of inflation and other factors for years. This has made the offies more competitive by comparison, so they have gained market share. It's simple economics and none of the changes this law brings about will make any difference.

All this trouble for a law that will inconvenience businesses and consumers, but achieve exactly nothing. Typical bloody Ireland.

"I do not know where this Bill came from and why it is so urgent as if the youth of Ireland will drink themselves to death unless it is enacted next week. Some of the youth of Ireland, unfortunately and regrettably, are drinking themselves to death, but I greatly doubt if there is much in this Bill that will stop that." -- Pat Rabbitte (always good value), Dáil Éireann 24/06/2008

"I remain somewhat concerned about the necessity for a District Court certificate for wine retail outlets or off-licences. I have been lobbied by people, some from small retail stores, who do not see wine as being a major problem. [b:1a4ozu5v]There is no evidence of large amounts of wine being consumed to the detriment of society in a way that would constitute a threat to public order[/b:1a4ozu5v]. I am more concerned about below-cost selling and cheap beers in terms of public order." -- Timmy Dooley, FF, Dáil Éireann 25/06/2008

I agree with most of the above comments re the Government only doing something becasse they wanted to be seen to be doing something about binge drinking.

On a slightly other nmatter - HairyMac note those Tesco Becks bottles are 275 mls not 330! Good price but a little sneaky form Becks with the smaller bottles!!!
