S&N bought by Carlsberg and Heineken. 18 years 3 months ago #1

Well that's it. Scottish and Newcastle have gone for the deal and Heineken will be getting the UK and Irish bit of the company. Do you think Heineken will continue with two stouts in their portfolio or are we going to loose one?

A few administrative hoops to jump through yet.

I had thought they might, until I read Bigears' point that Murphy's has really become a local niche beer in the last ten years. I could see them dropping it in Ireland, but continuing to brew it abroad.

I'd be surprised to see any of them disappear, I think they've tried to diversify the Holy Trinity of the stouts. With Beamish being the value pint and Murphys being the upmarket version. Last I heard they were trying to sell Murphys to rich tossers in wine glasses.

What do I care though, I rarely drink stout. That two part pour annoys me.

the two part pour is crap. they dont need to do it . it just looks better. time taken pouring it in one would work but guinness got a hold of it and decided they could market it....from the horses mouth its all sh1te. just another trick to lure in the weak and brainless. although i have been offered a proper guinness in a jazz club in chicago...3 part pour!

I don't know, but it could have implications for Caledonian.

I think the deal was that S&N bought the Caley brewery in order to brew their beers but part of the deal was that Caley could still brew their beers there. I remember when Scottish Craft Brewers visited and the deal was explained to us someone asked what would happen to that deal if S&N was bought and they didn't really have an answer and it was kind of laughed off as being very unlikely. I got the impression that that possibility hadn't been considered or accounted for in the contract. However, I guess that we'll soon find out exactly what the implications are for Caley...

Cheers, Les

There was a piece in the ST business section the week before last (pre-deal), saying that if the deal goes through, the owners of Beamish might buy-out from Heineken, and go it alone. I'll see if I can dig it out tonight.
