I know what you mean tho; just cos you support one team, doesnt mean you have to trash-talk all the others.

Mind you, yourself and the beer nut have doubtless sampled more than I have!

Thanks for the good luck wishes from yourself and others, contract is coming to an end, im still writing grant proposals but to be honest i've been there done that for the last 10 years (been on about 8 different funding sources). Sick of having the second worst job security of any sector (only tourism and catering is worse and thats because it seasonal ). If i get a permenant job I care not a jot about whether the grants get funded or not.

Hoping to use my experience if i can, even if its just lab teching on much reduced cash but if i can't even get one of those then anything to pay the mortgage basically.

I think the main problem i have with a number of the micros is their insistence on using rather bland dried yeasts simply for convience sake, a lot of micro beer tastes the same because they use the same yeast (you all now which yeast). Of course not everbody takes the easy way out some do actually go to the trouble of using a more characterful strain (and almost invariably they make superior beer IMO).

Im all about local beer, so local thats its brewed in my shed and i suppose that affects my opinion somewhat, I see myself as a brewer first and a beer appreciator second. The usual commercial slabs of beer might be lacking in character but you really have to try and brew one to understand just how difficult it is to brew something similar. Its not easy, i certainly haven't managed to brew anything as clean and flaw free despite a number of attempts.

For instance any banana head can knock out a decent stout, there is so many flavours to hide the imperfections behind but it take a level of techncial excellence to make the stuff the big commercials make and i kind of have a grudging respect for that.
