The archivist got back to me. He says they already have a Beamish archive, but it was never catalogued properly so they'll now be integrating the two collections. It'll take several months and will likely mean both collections will be off-limits for the duration.

He said he hasn't noticed any recipes in amongst the material already there (a brewery archive with nothing about beer -- only in Ireland, folks), but worryingly he also said that because Beamish is still a live product, it's possible that recipes and the like will not be available due to commercial sensitivity.

Yeah, because Heineken's share value could really suffer if we learned what went into Beamish's Knuckleduster.

Anyway, I'll keep an eye on the website for news of the end of cataloguing, however if anyone local wants to go along and view the old Beamish archive (Beamish and Crawford Brewery 1787-1956[/url:36th89f4]) before it's taken out of circulation, they're open Tuesday to Friday, 10-5. Bring photo ID. They're only round the corner from Heineken too, if you want to do a bit of glaring on the way past.

Interesting, I am in Cork City Council next Monday/Tuesday doing some work for the library (coincidently enough), I might take a wander in a take a gander.

As far as the skerries brewery goes, I found out exactly where it was, not surprisingly it was beside the pub "the malting house" on a site that is now a housing estate called "the maltings". It's at holmpatrick, which is a continuation of my street. I feel duty bound to resurrect it, someday. From a skerries historical soc presentation:

There was a Thomas Armstrong - circa 1784 - he was a brewer and a church warden for 61 years. There was a brewery where the present day housing estate - "The Maltings" - is located. At one stage the family name was Judge. One of the Judge children became known as F.J.McCormack, the famous Abbey Theatre actor and film star of the 1940s and '50s.[/url:3qd6egsk]

Sorry Adeptus I missed that you had already unearthed this! anyway I'm going to see if I can find out a bit more about it, seeing as it's only a few doors down. Funnily enough the location was behind the old convent (although that probably wasn't there then), and at the back there was a holy well. I wonder did the brewery use it? I wonder did the nuns have a brewery tap <!-- s:wink: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_wink.gif" alt="" title="Wink" /><!-- s:wink: -->
