Oh, by the way, OSI tried to digitise some features on the maps, so if you click the "historic layers" link on the right while the Historic B&W maps are turned on, you'll get the chance to turn on a brewery layer. They do not have them all, as I found many during the map search last year (same maps, but sourced from DoEHLG).

As it happens, I worked for the company that built that mapping application <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt="" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->

One reason this project is worthwhile is that it allows to get extra annoyed with stories like this[/url:34z3v666]:

The 1950s is when Diageo's predecessors got involved. The brewery operated independently from 1897 to 1953.

Presenting the project's first actual statistical data on a dead Irish brewery's beer. Ron dug this up[/url:3l3bzyik] in an 1872 Dictionary of chemistry:

Perry's Ale, 1870, had an OG of 1045.8 and an FG of 1006.48 -- 5.13% ABV. Not terribly exciting, or different to what every other ale brewer in the UK was turning out, but it's a start. Perry's was in Rathdowney, Co. Laois.

That F.G is around what ron has posted for some London brewer of the time.

Not extract to much from it but it might suggest they where keeping up with the English counterparts

And the numbers are pretty similar to the Scottish ale in the same table. I'd say everyone was making the same beers, which you'd expect in an age before brand loyalty had really taken a firm hold.
