I think you're right on the below cost selling, though it could be at cost. Tesco are their own distributor (using Stobarts from a centralised depot) so they cut out the middle man meaning cheaper prices. They also can put in a much bigger order making it cheaper to buy per unit. The publican gets his beer off a distributor which adds expense as the distributor needs to get his cut. Orders are smaller too and I'd say per ml 300 ml bottles are more expensive to produce than 500 ml. Still €5 does seem excessive.

Tesco, Musgraves (I think), Aldi and Lidl all use centralized distribution which is cheaper.

that was always a good oul deal (got it once with a 6 pack of guinness) - but with the 8 degrees aspect thrown in its just got better <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->
