Anyone care for a rematch? This time with English Ales.
[quote:qmaxn79p]TheBeerNut

What 4 English Ales might be popular enough to try this?
That would be fun. Bishop's Finger, London Pride, Hobgoblin and Black Sheep.

Dead easy, right?[/quote:qmaxn79p]

I think this would be best tied in with one of the regular meet-ups.

What would be the ideal beers? I would think the most popular should be the way to go. From www.ratebeer.com/Story.asp?StoryID=275
the 30 best English ales are

1) Newcastle Brown Ale
2) Bass Ale
3) Worthington White Shield
4) Gale’s Prize Old Ale
5) Theakston’s Old Peculier
6) Morland Old Speckled Hen
7) Harvey’s Imperial Extra Double Stout
8. Robinson’s Old Tom
9) Wadworth 6X
10) Mackeson Stout.
11) Courage Russian Imperial Stout
12) Charles Wells Bombardier
13) Lees Harvest Ale
14) Manns Original Brown Ale
15) Marston’s Pedigree
16) Thomas Hardy’s Ale
17) Whitbread Gold Label
18. Sarah Hughes Ruby Mild
19) Shepherd Neame Bishop’s Finger
20) Sam Smith’s Nut Brown Ale
21) Sam Smith’s Old Brewery Pale Ale
22) Double Maxim
23) Hook Norton’s Old Hooky
24) Fuller’s ESB
25) Fuller’s London Porter
26) Young’s Double Chocolate Stout
27) Bateman’s XXXB
28. Greene King’s Abbot Ale
29) Everards Tiger
30) Badger’s Tanglefoot:

Many of these are not even close to ales. But those that are that I have gotten in Ireland are
1) Newcastle Brown Ale
5) Theakston’s Old Peculier
6) Morland Old Speckled Hen
Marston’s Pedigree
19) Shepherd Neame Bishop’s Finger
24) Fuller’s ESB
28. Greene King’s Abbot Ale

His list is missing London Pride, Hobgoblin and Black Sheep.

So what four ales do you want?

I just don't think popularity on ratebeer is a good measure of popularity, unless you're measuring ales that Americans have access to. Newkie Brown? Puh-lease.

[/quote:a4zaetk3]Marston's Pedigree is a possibility, especially since I think it's of a quality well below any of the other four I mentioned. Fuller's ESB should be detectable by its strength, so I'd be inclined to leave it out, and also to keep the brewers diverse. Abbot Ale might be a good one to throw into the mix. Four glasses out of five possible beers?

Newkie Brown at the top and London Pride doesn't even make the list? *Hawwrruuk! P'too!* I denounce thee!
