Slight of topic, Ireland used to produce a lot of bananas

They came in green and ethylene gas was added, they ripe and because you have changed the product it know be called a product of Ireland

EU closed this loop hole down

In fairness that happens all the time. There are oyster beds where I live. The oysters are then shipped to France, where they just spend long enough there to be branded as French oysters. Unfortunately it's the way of the world.
Hopefully, one day, that brewery will open here and we'll have another 'genuine' Irish microbrewer.

Just coped what you are saying Thom and yes, that would be an idea, but how would people react then?

Actually I am curious about that. What if I went to someone like Huyghe and got them to make me a quality, bottle conditioned, Irish Stout and then started marketing it in a similar way to the way Árainn Mhór is being sold?

Séan's Dublin Stout. Lot's of bunf about the history of Stout brewing in Dublin on the label and brewed in the EU on there somewhere.

Would that be an Irish craft beer?

This is the nub of the matter. These guys have to break into the Irish market, and it's one of the toughest drink markets in the world thanks to unchallenged monopolies and prohibitive excise. Once they're set up in Ireland we can start to judge them. For the moment I'm going to assume they are a small set up struggling to survive and they are having to use unpopular and unpleasant techniques to do so.

In that scenario I would be in complete agreement with you. For now I'm, foolishly perhaps, holding on to the notion that, as Thom says, it is just a stepping stone to 'legitimacy'.

But the only difference between my scenario and the way Árainn Mhór are doing things, is that they have made vague mentions of starting a brewery, at some unspecified future date.

So if I added similarly vague assurances, the above stout would magically transform into an Irish Craft Beer?
