The best guide that I use is 'Tasting Beer' by Randy Mosher - alot fewer styles and broader than BJCP as well as damn good read for the beer geek (i.e. me!)

yes, his 'Radical Brewing' is abit of a classic. I read it before I got into Homebrewing and it inspired me to get cracking!
