Have I read somewhere that there is a difference between Food Safe c02 and Fire Extinguisher c02 (whats the betting I'm gonna feel foolish after asking this question )[/quote:og075klm]
I was speaking to a local gas retailer this morning.
He reckons that they use CO2 with impurities in fire extinguishers.
He wasnt trying to push his own either, his 1st reply to my question about gas was "we'd be to expensive for you, try jack out the road "[/quote:og075klm]

Well, if you get them refilled in a place like dryicetech (leinsterco2), who say specifically, that they supply to the foodgrade market, the co2 should be ok.
I think where an issue may arise is that the cylinders are made from different materials (i think).
Fire extinguishers have to be light, so are made with aluminium (i think), the actual cylinders for beer seem a lot heavier.
Is there an issue with using an aluminium container for co2 - will it make us mad like the yanks

yeah - that's what I read somewhere on the oul tinterweb - could even have been another post here - it would be interesting to find out then if once emptied do these fire extinguishers still contain the impurities or what the story is with them - I mean I'm all for cheap and don't mind the odd alcoholic poisoning - but isn't dodgy carbon dioxide twice the killer of it's monoxide buddy ? (joke)
But Seriously (Phil )... is this something that needs to be considered ?? I guess greater minds can tell !!!

I think I'm going to empty my fire extinguisher bottle, have a good look inside to make sure it's in good nick and get a fresh fill of nice clean food grade gas from Dry Ice tech.
Just in case.

I'm no authority on co2 but if there were non desirable gasses or otherwise in a bottle supplied to a fire safety company I'm sure it could lead to disastrous events...

If you are unsure ring them but don't go on what another person heard on another forum about dome guy who knows a guy who's cousin is an authority on gas....

I've been using this gas for near 3 years and I'm ok. Beer is fairly good if I do say so....

Right.
I just spoke with a Guy in Doyle and Doyle( the owner I think)
They also own Dryice tech.
The gas they sell in Tallagh comes out of the same tank.
He says there are no issues with food safety.
I'll get them to have a look at the bottle on monday and get a fresh fill.
They seem sound!

I wont take that as a cut at my previous post

So I remembered one of the lads I bike with is a gas analysis technition. Horses mouth if you can trust a random punter on the net

There are 5 different grades of CO2 and there should be a difference in industrial and food grade, however the reality in Ireland is thats not the case.
He wouldnt have a problem using industrial himself as most of the impurities are water and some sulphates.

Where he has a huge problem is using the fire extinguisher bottles, he got to technical with his answer for this, but there is a chance (very slim) but a chance of catastrophic failure.

Take what you will from that, I'm sure rossa will ignore it.
I will not be using a fire extinguisher and the lads that do know me can vouch that I am a skinflint and save money wherever I can
