I don't want to get involved in a style argument here now or anything, but (personally) I think, disregarding style, that this is a great beer. So, what if it's an American IPA? I had it alongside Sierra Nevada's Celebration Ale, an American IPA of similar character, at both the Easter Festival in the Well and last weekend in the Bierhaus. Each time the O'Hara's came out on top for me. I thought it was a more complex, interesting, and ultimately tasty beer each time.

We can argue about style all we want, but at the end of the day, all I care about is how good the beer in my glass is, and I think the DIPA is terrific.

All I care about the IPA, DIPA, Irish PA etc is the PA part. I'll make my own mind up about its supposed hoppyness and strength.

So after all this arguing, all that can be empirically deduced is that the DIPA is all gone?

Crai.

I'll find out next Wednesday if there's any left at the brewery.

Just another Irish plain ale.....

There's experimenting,(which I'm all for) as then there's just not doing enough research into a style, and getting it wrong.

For me it seemed like the guys in Carlow had been hearing all about this crazy "new" style called DIPA and decided to make one, without really doing any tastings of commercially available examples or even really looking at any style guidelines.

All in all I didn't think it was a bad beer, but maybe "strong amber" would have been a more descriptive style title.
