Heh. My Sister has a small grocery shop. I could go in at 8am and buy as much wine as I want. For the privilege or her stocking beer the opening bid is about €170,000.

Is that accurate? I was under the impression that a off-licence licence was a more reasonable price. About €3,000 or so.

I don't know how much digging she did into it, but that's the figure she told me. Thinking about it, every forecourt that has wine would surely have beer too if it was only a case of three grand.

Actually, thinking about it again, the larger figure is possibly to acquire a licence, then it costs €3000 a year, no?

I'm not sure of the figures tbh, I was just speculating on what I'd heard. Though I was considering that a fair number of Spars, garages and such have started stocking beers now and it's not their primary business, they'd want to be anticipating a decent turnover in that area to justify a initial outlay of the higher figure.

I don't think that is correct noby. I did a bit of research on this a while back and you need to get a separate licence to sell each of wine, beer and spirits, but it isn't anything like that order of magnitude.

Interestingly enough, the actual charge for a pub licence is quite cheap too. It's the cost of extinguishing an existing licence that bumps it up. I don't think you have to extinguish an existing beer off-licence to set up a new one, like you do a pub licence, but I could be wrong.

Can't find the damn email with info. Infuriating.
