Re-badging/branding irish craft beer with a pub's name 14 years 8 months ago #13

surely if a brewery was to supply said premises it means they are not already in there under their own brand. i cant see how independant brewers wouldnt jump at the chance to get a contract. Obviously it would be a batch whenever they have free fermenters ....a lot of pubs is USA do it. One micro supplies many bars each rename it....not that many punters question the exact source /recepie / heritage of beers bar the xxx number of members here

Look, breweries are in the business of selling beer, and a lot of the Irish breweries have gone down the re-badging/branding route.
I don't want to talk about the specific example in the OP, but in general if it's worth it for the brewery, and not against their ideology, then breweries are usually happy to do it. It's just business.

Branding.

A beer made by O'Hara's has been branded Buckley's.[/quote:35zzjbdj]

Fair enough. I took re-badging/branding to be similar terms. To me Buckley's is more like contract brewed, i.e. the B&C approached a brewery with specs on a beer they wanted brewed specifically for them.

yea sounds much of a contract brew as the brewery was approached to produce something different and for a specific group not for re sale to others

Ah no probs. It's a fine line. It is contract brewed, you're right, but it's also branded. So everyone's right!

I'm inclined to agree with Adam. I can see the upside from the bar's perspective (although I suspect it's an exercise in vanity) but I would question the long term benefit to the brewer who is trying to build awareness of their product.

I also think it's confusing for the beer drinker - if I enjoy a pint of Helvick Gold in a bar I'm more likely to order it again the next time I see it. This opportunity is lost with a pub badged beer. There is no shortage of 'local' beer available in Ireland in any case, it's not a big country - how narrow does the definition of 'local' have to be?
