This rant, of course, doesn't apply to a struggling new business or any biz in the homebrew market. But in general, competition is a good thing and we need more of it.[/quote:3o43qsmr]
Oh no, I agree that *competition* is a good thing. Scullduggery, however, of the type undertaken by some of the major supermarket chains, is not.
I would rather see competition for the best service and range of products than purely on prices.[/quote:3o43qsmr]

Would you consider price fixing and anti-competitive practises as Skullduggery? Because this is happening in the spraymalt market, someone asked recently why spraymalt is so dear, it's not, it's cheap for bakers suppliers, it's just the homebrew market that is being ridden for all it's worth, and this is with the help of the homebrew suppliers.

On service, choice and technical savvy the Homebrew Company score very well. They were a breath of fresh air when they opened as prioir to their arrival many of us were relying on Hop & Grape for supplies and while they are a good supplier it would often take a week plus £19 shipping to get the supplies we needed.

I don't believe Walmart (or MoreBeer for that matter) are about to enter the Irish homebrew market any time soon so as I see it the best way of having access to a wide range of quality products at a good price with next day delivery is to make sure that it's in the local suppliers interest to provide and expand this service. This is already happening and will continue to happen if it is a viable business for the supplier.

Yes of course.
As far as I am aware though there's a difference between malts for brewing and malts for baking, the latter can get away with lower quality than the former; this may or not have something to do with the price differential, but I would be positive that the sheer volumes produced for the baking industry far outweigh those of the homebrew industry (I can't imagine any commercial brewery using spraymalt, so the market for brewing spraymalt has to be tiny in comparison to baking/general food production)

On the quality point, it's not valid according to the maltsters at Muntons, when I phoned them the statement was that it's the very same stuff, make of it what you will.

you might want to look into getting a different hop supplier at those prices. hbc and eirehops[/url:1s8dp2bk] are about 20-90% cheaper for those hops.

what crystal malt is that you have in stock? i mean how light/dark is it?
