I have to say, the original poster has succeeded in his goal it would seem.

This has turned in to a rather fun debate on some of the things we should and should not be doing.

I don't think we should be dictating to pubs but I do think we should educate them and leave it up to them.
At the end of the day, if certain pubs start taking notice of proper serving temperature and start doing it correctly then they might see an increase in trade.

Or it might backfire, who knows?

Who decides on the correct serving temperature?

Diageo push cold Guinness but many pubs (in Limerick anyway) still offer a soft or unchilled pint because customers want it.

Beoir don't and shouldn't have a dog in this fight. The correct serving temperature is a very subjective matter and will vary from person to person. Beoir issuing dicta on serving temperatures is a bit big brother.

You wouldn't go into any other type of business and try to dictate how someone else s product is sold would you? Wht is this industry any different[/quote:2k3e3ln2]

For all we know, the breweries do talk about serving temperature. As you say, maybe they are just happy to have an account and they don't want to make a fuss.

That's one reason why Beoir's giving advice on serving temperature is something we should do. We can advise without fear of losing accounts. We can put the case impartially.

Here's another way to look at it. The AA give advice on motoring even though they don't make cars.

It's a bit disingenuous trying to make out that serving temperature is a purely subjective matter. For one thing, you don't get a choice what temperature the publican serves your beer at. It's take it or leave it. Second of all, serving it warm, like that 35C case Séan linked to earlier in the thread, is clearly way out of order. That's pretty close to the temperature of urine, which is probably what you'd think you'd be drinking.

No one is talking about issuing dicta.

We're talking about establishing scientifically what temperature most people think craft beer should be served at and then recommending it from a position of authority. No one is going to be knocking heads together if pubs continue to chill all the flavour away. Reuben has been more than clear that he's all about education.

Beoir is a consumer advocacy group not a scientific research group. The correct serving temperature for beer should be established by the breweries for their individual beers.
