Growler fills in Irish pubs? 12 years 9 months ago #25

[quote:cnfomwrw]You get their beers which you cant buy in off licenses and on draught rather than co2 if thats your thing.[/quote:cnfomwrw]

yeah, but are Sweetmans beers that ground breakingly good that you would pay €4 a pint to drink at home. Don't get me wrong, they are nice beers but €15 would get you a lot of better beers in Redmonds.

A bottle of Sierra Nevada harvest and 2 500ml bottles of nice English ale would give you roughly the same volume but the quality of the beer is far greater IMO.

I applaud the idea bot the economics would have to be right.

Yeah id agree, roughly the same, just down to personal preference of which beers you like.
I really like their porter and wouldnt mind that or the pale ale in mine. I think their beers have improved in very recent times too.

Their 3.2 pint growler costs £5 to buy and £10 to fill. They also do a 1.6 pint one for exactly half the prices. They fill them in a machine which flushes the bottle with CO2 before the beer goes in.

I think thats a fair price!

Er, yeah but no.

For the sake of comparison, a 16oz pint of craft beer in NYC is about $[b:oj34yocw]7-8[/b:oj34yocw].
Half gallon growler fills (which neatly parse into 4 US pints) come in around the $[b:oj34yocw]16-22[/b:oj34yocw] range, depending on ABV.
Feel free to check my math[/url:oj34yocw].
(Oh, and empty growlers are only about $5.)

So... between half to 2/3rds the price of a pint at the bar.
And why shouldn't it be cheaper? You're not paying for rent, electricity, linens, staffing, water, etc.
You're paying for the beer and only the beer.

The costs of living between the two cities are comparable. $8 = €6 these days, but we drink 20oz pints, so beer is actually a bit cheaper here.
Which means there is ***[b:oj34yocw]absolutely no reason[/b:oj34yocw]*** for growlers to be as expensive as they are in Dublin, other than charging for novelty value.

Now, I admit that NYC is growler paradise, probably the only thing that New York does better than the rest of America when it comes to craft beer.
But growlers will never catch on here at these price points, and maybe publicans don't want them to.
That's a shame for us.

Well i certainly wouldnt mind them being cheaper (and i only heard they were going to be 15 from the barman so maybe lets wait and see)

I dont know how they charge so little for the actual growler in the states ie 5dollars. Sweetmans said they were buying them from the states so clearly they are going to be more expensive here factoring in shipping/duties etc. They are getting ceramic ones not plastic i think.

Maybe a fairier comparison instead of usa v ireland and off license v pub might be restaurants that offer their food to takeaway. Generally they only give 10% off their price. Would this be fair with growlers?

I dont agree wholly with the staff/electricity etc costs. If i go in to get a growler the place will be heated while i wait to be served, i may sit on a stool and the staff will fill my growler. I might even use the toilet while im there! I think it would count as a service.

But your probably right in that they might not have thought the whole thing through and it might just fail and they will blame it on people just not interested in them instead of the price.
