Growler fills in Irish pubs? 13 years 5 months ago #1

Just wondering whether or not there's anything in the law of the land that would prevent pubs offering a growler fill service? (for anyone wondering what the hell a growler is, it's a ceramic/glass jug used to take draught beer away from a bar - very popular in the States - and once sealed, the beer stays fresh in the jug for 4 or 5 days)

I know that both the B&C and Porterhouse offer a take-away service on their bottled range, but could this happen with draught beer?

If it would be possible I think it would be a cracking idea - a pub could sell a (possibly branded?) ceramic/glass growler for a certain price and then just knock a euro or so off the price of a pint for people who want to take the beer away?

What do people think? Indeed, would this even be allowed in Ireland?

All the best,

Alex

Alot of the off licences in New Zealand offer this service for craft beers. They have the kegs in the cold room and you fill the bottles yourself. It was great for going to parties.

I have only encountered it once in Ireland and that is in The Bierhouse[/url:2qfywj5z] in Cork.

it is legal to sell beer onsite with a 7 days publican licence for off site consumption, which would include draft. So yes a pub can do growlers.

Yeah but in Dublin they'd need to come up with a different name....

Haha, maybe a bit of a rebrand for the Dublin population would help!

Well, glad that there's no legal barrier to doing it. Will sound out some of the craft beer publicans over the next couple of weeks to see if they'd fancy doing it. I think it would be a great thing to start off.
