Following on from this post[/url:3ryivyor]

I'm wondering if anyone else here is into old school shaving.

I didn't shave for years cos I wasn't arsed hacking my face to pieces for a kings ransom every week.
I always had rashes on my neck from shaving making it very uncomfortable and it's so expensive.

In any case I recently bought myself an old school double edged razor, a Wilkinson Sword just to try out with some really good blades (Feathers), then upgraded to a Merkur Progress, got some good shaving creams, oil and some alum block and styptic pencils.
I had about 85 euro initial investment with a luxury starter pack[/url:3ryivyor] from shaving.ie (not affiliated in any way).

I went from a once a week shaver to almost shaving daily now as it's so comfortable and the blades are so cheap and last ages.
You'll cut your costs majorly with a tub of Taylors cream costing twelve quid about every three months, and blades costing 60 quid for 200 on the high end with Feathers (my favourite brand)or 200 Personnas for €22 at the low end, in any case peanuts after the initial investment of the kit, and that can even be as low as a Wilkinson sword classic kit with synthetic brush for 8 euros or so.

The shave is a routine thing and I tend to do it in the evening after my workout shower, it's a great way to wind down.
There are a few online forums, I don't tend to frequent much as I find the overdiscussion of shaving to be a bit strange <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->

Some of the guys get into it like any man hobbies and just buy buy buy and have really expensive and extensive collections of vintage and restored blades, the hardcore lads get into strops and straight edge razors.

Anyone else into it? Anyone else tempted?

It's also a much more comfortable shave and my neck no longer flares up in nasty spots all the time like it used to, now that might be the whole regime with alum etc or just that safety razors simply don't cause as many ingrown hairs, but in any case I actually like the routine now and my neck isn't all messed up all the time.

A good forum is Badger and Blade[/url:3ryivyor].

I dunno Eoin, you're preaching to a load of bearded guys!

I've always been fascinated by the idea buy afraid of cutting myself!

Anyway I'll be in no rush I still have 4 mach3 blades that probably cost me roughly 10 pints, so I'll consider in a couple of blades time!

How do airport security view your razor? and I assume a spare blade if you're away longer than a weekend?

Matt Chrome Timor Safety Razor €18 is a great starter as its non aggresive and pretty hard to cause irratition the wik sword de razor from boots is a good cheap razor thats more aggressive and therfore gives a closer shave but is more likely to cause irratation.
i like wilk sword de blades best other common ones seem to blunt apart from feathers that are too sharp in my straight

I haven't had the razor in hand luggage going through an airport yet, not so sure they'd be thrilled about it, but as said it's as yet untested.

The shave from a mach 3 is far inferior once you get used to the DE shaving and the concept of a two or a three pass shave.
