I remember coming across these (or similar) a long time ago, probably my grandfathers and in my grandfathers house, but have no idea where they might be now.

Recession cut in and I moved from my (now) age-old Mach 3 to Tescos 3 blade equivalent(ish).
The Tesco one is as bad as a several-shaves-later Mach 3.
Tesco=Crap IMO, I got nicks that I would never have gotten from the Mach 3.

What good razors on the cheap end of the scale that compare to the Gillettes?

[Note from my avatar that I sprouted a shrub at one point!]

I hate paying gilette prices.
I get rid of my fluff with a tesco gilette rip off. For about a tenth of the gilette price.
Does exactly the same job as far as im concerned. I havent got a whole lot to cultivate.

I have a little sly chuckle to myself everytime i have a shave, knowing ive saved money <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->

How often do you need to change the blades on these safety razors?

Sign me up to the DE razor club!

I converted about five years ago, and it made a huge difference to me. As Eoin said, I changed my whole shaving routine at the time, which helped, but the single DE blade also plays a major part.
Beard hysteresis was seen as the way forward, and was the start of multiple blades, but is probably the main reason people get sore necks/in-grown hairs. I just usually do one pass with the DE razor, but if I've more time a second or third pass will give you a real smooth shave.

As for carry on luggage - the blades are specified on the list of objects not allowed - so I bring everything else and pick up a pack of blades at my destination or at the airport. I have a cheap travel razor I use for this.

John - if you find one of these cheap razors (Gillette ones with plastic handles) they will work fine to get you started. That, the blades, and some Palmolive soap should be available in most chemists. After that you can start looking at places like shaving.ie

YMMV but I usually get 4-5 shaves from each. Some blades last longer than others.
