Which leads to my next question for discussion - if there is a big number of entries, will the competition be divided into categories. Should this be decided up front?[/quote:38c9q6e4]

I'd imagine best keep it simple - you could have catogories - and if the entries are very low - you could merge them a little.

So taking a leaf out of the American Homebrew association

They Have:

Homebrewer of the year

Cat 1: Light Lager
Cat 2: Pilser
Cat 3: Euro Amber
Cat 4: Dark Lager
Cat 5: Bock
Cat 6: Light Hybrid Beer
Cat 7: Amber Hybrid Beer
Cat 8: English Pale Ale
Cat 9: Scottish and Irish Ale
Cat 10: American Ale
Cat 11: English Brown Ale
Cat 12: Porter
Cat 13: Stout
Cat 14: IPA
Cat 15: German Wheat and Rye Beer
Cat 16: Belgian and French Ale
Cat 17: Sour Ale
Cat 18: Belgian Strong Ale
Cat 19: Strong Ale
Cat 20: Fruit Beer
Cat 21: Spice/Herb/Veg Beer
Cat 22: Smoke / Wood Aged Beer
Cat 23: Specialty Beer

But you could easily merge many of these together.

Once the entry time is closed you can merge categories so there is a minimum of 3 beers in each category. The judges should not be entitled to enter beer - or at least not judge their category.

So what do you think - 5-10 Categoris ?

There is a way to tag the bottles so no one can know the owner of a beer until the end. All bottles should be the 500ml pauliner style - these are the most common - labels should be with selotape as they will be removed. Unusual caps will be replaced.

Depends what you mean by "decent sized". Against the Grain has a little used upstairs room that can generally be reserved for special functions if the attendees will be buying drinks.

That's an interesting one - I'd imagine hiring somewhere like this between 11am and 3pm on a Sunday wouldn't be a problem -

My angle would be - lets try something - if its too big / too small we can adjust accordingly for the next time.

I will do some research into venues and sizes and post back.

Realistically this will be a 'during the day' type event on a saturday or sunday - probably a sunday to avoid the crowds - remember - its not a p*ss up and we dont want to send out that message.

That's assuming that it makes sense to judge against style guidelines at all vs. a purely hedonistic judging system of "this one tastes best". The pure hedonistic system obviously can be more subjective, but even if you have different categories for judging (likely custom "style" guidelines) the judging itself could still be performed either against defined style criteria or pure hedonistic "which do you enjoy more?" criteria.

We're definitely getting the cart a bit ahead of the horse if we haven't even agreed to HAVE a home brew competition yet, and don't yet even have a free venue to make it possible.

I think categorisation is a good idea, it doesn't need to be completely BJCP related. I wouldnt let the right/ wrong of style guides confuse the issue.
With regards to putting the cart before the horse...
Easy up with those negative waves... I don't think a venue is a problem at all, it's about finding the appropriate venue, also we need to sure we have the demand, it will be a pain in the ass to go and organise it only for 6 people to actually submit beer.

The more people talk - easier to gauge the interest

I agree, there good in just discussing the different thoughts people have on the subject.
Some form of categorization would be essential, you just cant be judging a super hoppy pale ale against a dark mild or a Belgian blonde

Most shows/competitions have category winners and then a final "Best in Show Award"
