Thought: I know we would like to make it a national thing but that could be hard to manage in one go. So we could have a few regionals all held in the same manner - finding free/residential venues, then a grand finale - coinciding with something like the beoir AGM where alot of people might want to go to in the first place.

Here is a suggestion.
Have qualifying rounds from which a reduced number of beers are put forward to enter the final competition which will have reduced numbers.
Qualifying rounds could take place in a persons house over the course of a few hours. E.g. X amount of people gather in a house in Rathmines, Entered beers of 100-200 mil i.e. enough to gauge its characteristics is passed around. The winner or top 2 are put forward to a central competition etc

On one hand it will allow everyone to enter and it will naturally limit the number of people turning up for a final.

Most craft shows with a competition element need small quantities, for example:

6 Onions
5 3 metre long parsnips (!!)
1 Jar Strawberry Jam
1 Craft cheese
1 Bottle of wine
1 litre of beer

From following the threads it seems that entry is by the KEG!! or Corny!!

That way there is lots of beer to sell to Joe Public!!

This is [u:pvs2z9u1]no[/u:pvs2z9u1]t a home brew competition its a home brew beer festival and would be very difficult to organise legally

I thought this thread was about improving our home brewed product by a small pannel of experienced/considered judges tasting and evaluating our beers.

If we limit the entry to say: 2 500 ml bolles or 3 330 or one 1 litre then if a big thirsty crowd turns up then they buy the craft beers from the venue we choose - no entry fee and the sales to Joe Public and all the Beoir members pays for the venue

Setting aside the legal issues for a moment, I'd be interested to hear what people's opinions are on how such an event (or qualifying event) should be judged. Some possible options:

(a) Anyone who wants to put themselves forward as a judge can do so, and then a panel could be selected randomly from this pool.

(b) A group vote could be taken of the people in attendance at the event (assuming this is practical).

(c) Beoir members (or people registered on the forum) could elect a panel of willing participants to do the judging.

Personally, I favour option (b), but would be happy to endorse option (a) as well.

Option (c) is less appealing, mainly because I don't see any reason to privilege any particular person's opinion over anybody else's.

What do you reckon would work best?
