B&C on the quietest Sunday (business-wise) of the month for them?

Although if you have say 300 beers, how do you judge them all and come up with a winner in just one day? That sounds like a recipe for getting arse-faced to me, and not much else!

What this boils down to is money.

If we do a single, organised homebrew competition, on a weekend say, we will need a venue and that will cost. That in itself isn't a problem, but it means we need to charge entry to cover costs.

Where we run into trouble is when people get to drink untaxed beer after paying for entry. It could be argued that you are effectively paying for beer when you are paying entry and if there is no other benefit to entry I would be very surprised if a judge would see it as anything else.

To do this, we would need to figure out a way to have this little gathering without charging people in, or without giving people tax free beer to drink.

It's a tough one.

Or we we could go along the lines as the Trouble Brewing style. We set a date, say July, and elect a judging panel. I would happily put my beer to the taste buds of John , Sean and a anyone else who makes the grade. For our first one Home brew competition I think this may be the way to go. Keep it "local" before be go out and try break into the world where H&S are gonna stick there noses in. Just my opinion.

Bottles could be dropped off and styles set.
Could be as easy as posting bottles to an address.

I would love to see how my beers come up against other beers and would be happy for an elected panel to judge. ( This year)

Its not a huge amount of money even if we are liable for tax/excise. another option is find a way of paying the tax. Through one of our brewery friends maybe.

I would think that as soon as you make it official by introducing tax and revenue people it would just be the starting point. i think we should start out small this year and give Beoir a year to recruit and solicitor/homebrewer sympathetic to our cause who hopefully could advice on any legal nono's
