VAT on Beer 14 years 4 months ago #1

Am I right in thinking that in the pub trade VAT is calculated as follows:

Buy the beer from the brewer at say €2 a pint ( This includes the excise duty but no VAT)

The pub then adds their markup of say €2

Then the VAT is then calculated as 23% on the €4

i.e. sell at 4.92 a pint

Cheers

That's pretty much it.

FYI I priced kegs of beer recently. Most craft beers, Guinness and Carlsberg etc., run around €140 to €160 for 50L (approx 88 pints).

The cheapest I found is Tuborg at €88 a keg.

The brewer will also charge VAT at 23%.

And that is then rebated. In the end, VAT is 23% of the sale price.

Effectively you're paying €60-€70 per keg for "Carlsberg don't do......." TV adverts. Not so funny now are they!
