I would read this as 140/160 plus VAT. When you are in industry you quote prices net of VAT.

The publican has is at about 1.70 a pint - of which I presume off set the VAT he paid - so now it cost him
1.40 a pint ... (roughly)

So how exactly are we getting to €4.70 ?

The Excise is missing ... but still ...[/quote:2iyg555g]
Dempsey is right, the prices I quoted are ex VAT, which is not a fixed number as it's up to the publican what he/she wants to charge for a pint.

Say a pint of Carlesberg. Keg is €160, so a pint is €1.82. If the publican charges €5 for it the VAT part is 93c, leaving a mark-up of €2.25, out of which rent and rates have to be paid even before he/she turns on a light or hires a staff member.

I've seen it for €3.30 a pint, but I know it can be had for less than €3 in some places.
