Brewer bashes Beeb over anti-beer bias 14 years 10 months ago #1

A Cumbria brewer has levelled serious charges against the BBC that it is deliberately ignoring beer in favour of imported plonk.

Dave Bailey, of the Hardknott brewery in Millom, reckons the Corporation's foodie output is heavily biased towards wine, and is therefore "deliberately and recklessly damaging the UK economy by its unreasonable and deliberate rejection of beer as a beverage to drink with food".

I wonder if we can hassle RTE the same way...

Good man Dave.

For any Twitterers, the plan is to watch Saturday Kitchen this week and suggest beer recommendations for the food on the #saturdaykitchen hashtag.

Is there any equivalent to this sort of show in Ireland?

He has a point about the Saturday Kitchen but there's been a few "Beer" related programmes on the Beeb.

I suppose wine is just considered more "foody" than beer. It is changing though.

When beer does tend to show up in food shows, it tends to be at the end of a sentence along the lines of "... or even a nice cold lager." <!-- s:evil: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_evil.gif" alt="" title="Evil or Very Mad" /><!-- s:evil: -->

Yeah, not knocking it. Definitely not a bad idea.

It's not that long ago that wine, in these isles, was being promoted as new lifestyle foody type thing, and now it's everywhere, even if it has gone done the cheap and plenty route.

In fairness to the Beeb though, they are quite good at promoting new foody trends once there's enough interest shown. I just hope that it doesn't go full circle like wine. By that I mean, beer is seen as cheap swilling liquid to get drunk on, and while the initial interest will be that it can be enjoyed with food, I'd be worried that it'll quickly revert to being 'cheap swilling liquid to get drunk on' while eating food.
