We Americans would further split our IPAs into (generally) East Coast and West Coast.

East Coast would have a stronger malt backbone, and be more likely to use more earthy, often English hops. West Coast stick to the C-hops, mostly, for big pine and citrus flavour.

For beers you can get in Ireland, drink a Sierra Nevada Torpedo next to a Dogfish Head 60 Minute to see what I mean.

You used to get Harpoon here, which is the one I most associate with the term "East Coast IPA". Snake Dog is another: I think it's still around. Would Brooklyn East India count, or is that something else altogether?

Garrett Oliver talks about basing EIPA on a 19th C book he read. He uses British pale malts and East Kent Golding and Northdown (along with some American hops) so I think that counts as an American brewer making an English IPA.

... poorly, IMO.

Actually, there's a thought: Meantime's IPA is probably quite a good typical example of an English IPA available here, though far stronger than most modern ones.

Ah, but now we get into modern English IPAs vs historical English IPAs (which Meantime call theirs). I'll just get the tin opener for this can of worms...

Agreed, though, Meantime is one of the best beers out of the UK with "IPA" on the label, wherever it fits in.

I personally can't stand the stuff, nor Fuller's IPA for that matter. Those harsh, metallic hops just don't do it for me.

I liked the St Peter's IPA, and love St Austell Proper Job (aka M&S Cornish IPA) but can't think of many other English IPAs I've enjoyed. Edited to add: White Shield is pretty good.
