Isn't this like the cork vs screw-cap debate that kicked off when wine producers started to switch over to caps? Now nobody takes a second look at what is keeping their wine in the bottle.
Out of curiosity, have any producers replaced glass bottles with PET screw caps?

Really? It's the first thing I check when making a wine purchase. It's a great indicator of whether the vineyard is traditional or if they are just in it for the money- If they 'short cut' it on the capping, what other short cuts have they taken.

Synthetic corks and screw tops were developed as a means of avoiding "cork taint" - contamination with 2, 4, 6-trichloroanisole (TCA). A fair bit of science goes into cap technology, I don't think it would be accurate to say that screw caps are solely a cost saving measure
