Fair enough .

If it was me though , I'd have capitalised on those therapeutic discoveries and made sure that one of them set me up .
It can be too easy to naively think that if you plough the ground that those that come after will reward you with some of what they reap , but in my experience you have to really go after the thing and make certain you get something out of it after . People are pretty selfish in most respects.

Being honest I'd imagine the post doc world is unnecessarily cutthroat . Keep plugging though !!

Its a nice idea but as an employee/postdoc at a uni you have no rights to anything you might discover or develop thats all owned by the uni.
But thanks for the words of encouragement

Yes you have no right to the IP ,
But you do have the unique skill set at that moment in time , which is when you capitalise on it , Later on that skill set isn't as unique , which is what makes it harder for you to use them to set the agenda for what you are doing .

I suppose I'm saying it's hard to gauge the right time for anything , but you should always try to strike when the iron is hot .

Do like Maynooth or UCC and create the Job close to home for yourself . bring the Job to you as it were .

I'll stop banging on after this i promise as i must be sounding like a very negative whinger

You are right that certainly I have on occasion developed particular skills that could be deemed to be almost unique, but thats only half the equation, to set up a biotech company/create jobs you need more than just a unique set of skills, you need backing and money, setting up a biotech company would make setting up a microbrewery look like very small beer indeed (pardon the pun, couldn't help myself.
The uni has on occasion set up spin-out companies but the guys that drive those things are at the prof level or above (not suprising considering the capital and risk involved in setting one up). After a decade or so several are still in existence and i believe even one or two are profitable its very much a big investment and long term game.

I suppose I just have to come to terms with the fact that i have choosen an occupation that has little long term prospects, i'll have to stop clogging the conveyor belt and make room for the next batch of young scientific researches already coming behind.
At the end of the day i suppose its not the unique skills that i've learnt which will be most use to me in the future but the transferable generic ones which i can take into any other job/occupation.
At the moment teaching or setting up a micro seem to be my obvious choices.

Bigears I think you could taste/smell the bog myrtle in the biddy early red. I could be imagining that though. Williams brothers use heather in Fraoc so wild flavoring does seem to be an option in a commercial beer.
