staff are pretty decent during the day (not because its quiet, probably cos they're there the longest and know that newer staff will work nights)...at night though they are awful. This also applies to their more Northern premises

I have to agree with Delzep, during the day the staff are a lot better, particularly those who have been there a while.

We've always found it amusing, in a slightly annoyed fashion, that despite frequenting the place consistently since it opened in the late 90's, even those staff who have lasted a while seem unable to remember a name or take much of an interest in getting to know (semi) regulars.

Contrast that with "the competition" where I imagine most folks on this list are greeted by name, as are any non ICB'ers who pop in regularly, and the casual visitor/tourist are also well served. Fair dues...

Yeah it always amuses people when I bring them in there for the first time that I'm greeted by at least 1 if not both managers as I go up the stairs. <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt="" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->

I wonder how long this pub would last if it swapped locations with B&C and kept the same sort of employees/training

I have heard this happening in a few good brewpubs and beer bars in the US. Unfortunately its maybe be more common that we like

That doesn't surprise me either. I used to enjoy the place for its range of beers but the staff have never been great. I've only ever met one staff member who seemed enthusiastic about the products on sale. The staff seem to be getting worse and someone like that is bad for business in any pub.
