Just read over some of the early posts in this thread, Can I strongly recommend you don't make cider in two litre plastic bottles (for that matter I wouldnt reuse them for anything!), they are only meant for single use and they will break down releasing small amounts of carcinogenic chemicals. Not good. Here is a cut and paste of what each of the recycling symbols mean for plastic the number is found in the symbol with the arrows.
Recycling Plastics
1 PET or PETE – Polyethylene terephthalate of the Polyester family - Questionable – depending on the quality, repeated use may cause the leaching of DEHA, a know human carcinogen. Light gauge containers such as store bought pop bottles should be a one time use only. Heavier gauge containers show no evidence of leaching chemicals.
2 HD-PE – High Density Polyethylene - OK – not known to leach unwanted chemicals.
3 PVC or V – Bad – Strong evidence to show the leaching of DEHA, a known human carcinogen.
4 LD-PE – OK – not known to leach unwanted chemicals although not as widely recycled as #1 or #2.
5 PP – OK – not known to leach unwanted chemicals although not as widely recycled as #1 or #2.
6 PS – Bad – suspected to possibly leach harmful carcinogens
7 Other/Assorted but usually polycarbonate – Bad – may contain leaching BPA. (Bisphenol A – harmful to humans)
DEHA is a plasticizer and can lead to cancer.
