Hi All,

Was thinking of giving the small scale extract brew a go as a first extract brew. I have everything I need to do except for the "sanitized cloth". Is that a muslin hops bag or just normal cloth?

Also, would it be a good starter for me looking to get into extract brewing?

A muslin hop bag, or a sheet of muslin. Best of luck with it.

I just made a small scale brew a couple of nights ago making a simple pale ale.

How long does fermentation take for these one gallon brews? Is it any quicker?

No, same time. But on the plus side, if you were doing a 50 litre brew the fermentation would take the same amount of time. <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

If you pitched a full sachet of yeast in to a small batch I would expect it to ferment out quicker as you would be pitching so many yeast cells relative to the amount of wort....not sure though.

I was going to leave it the normal amount of time. But when it started bubbling about three hours after I pitched the dehydrated yeast I thought it might be going faster.

Now that I think about it though the log phase of yeast growth is so vigorous that, as Atticus says, the volume of wort doesn't really matter. I guess the only difference in adding more yeast at the start is shortening the lag phase which is why I saw bubbles faster this time around.
