newToBrew - if your question is "is a stout tap absolutely essential to dispense stout" the answer is no.
You can dispense stout from any tap.
A stout tap has a little plate inside (probably amongst other things) with holes in it that goes towards producing the bubbles that form the creamy head.
As Tube says - if you're going to use a stout tap ya may as well go the hole hog and get the mixed gas setup.

thanks James - yeah I am considering setting up the mixed gas (Don't shoot me now but..) was thinking of using it not just for stout but also maybe for ales from time to time too, simply because at the demo I went to at the homebrewcompany.ie they had a pale ale going through the nitro too and i thought it was quiet nice - just something I am considering - could be an awful idea - probably just go with the CO2 stuff for now I guess I can always upgrade - extend the system in the future

I'm thinking of doing the same. I have a big mixed gas bottle, a mixed gas reg (that doesn't look the healthiest - any ideas where I can get one or even get this one repaired?)

As an aside - can you serve ales from a stout tap under nitro or would you just get a glass of foam? ?

Apologies, assumed you wanted a creamy head. James is of course right, any tap can be used to dispense stout.

I think I can match that price without ordering them from China, i.e. getting them a bit more locally.
