Beoir is Watching You!

Beer is Food
Brewing is Good
Alcohol is Strength

Hi guys,
As newbie, I just want to wish everyone the very best with Beoir. And it's about time we had something like it at long last. Fed up going in to too many pubs, and being only offered the same generic p**s, at criminal prices.
Hopefully, the tide is turning. Good luck to all.

I was thinking about this a bit more. Having read all the info and especially Barry's post it's obvious this has been a long thought out thing etc.

Now my question is ( to everyone not just Barry,Sean,John) does it make sense for Beoir to be a consumers group AND a hobby group (sorry if people find than pejorative, it's just to emphasise the difference I think there is between the two)?

Or does it make more sense to have the two seperate groups, focused on seperate interests while still working in synergy?

I wonder if CAMRA it would have been taken as seriously if it were set up and run by a group which had been set up and run by homebrewrs( yes I know not everyone on ICB is a brewer but that's essentially the function of ICB-to help homebrewers and promote it, even if now it has now exceeded that)(and yes i know CAMRA publish brewing books but its definitely a peripheral aspect). I just wonder if Beoir would end up confused as to its role. Can it realistically promote quality Irish beer, microbreweries, running festivals and homebrewing all at the same time?

Would an all encompassing organisation with the vast majority of online discussion based aroung brewing "scare" of people who would like to drink quality beer but have ZERO interest and perhaps disregard for homebrewing(for whatever misguided reason!).

Anyway just a few thoughts for discussion/reply

We did think very hard about this, and discussed it at length. We decided to keep the two bodies together because of the momentum we already have from ICB. We want to keep that and build on it, rather than start from scratch.

I think homebrewing and craft beer are very comfortable bedfellows. Britain offers a poor parallel here because of its brewing history, and the fact that CAMRA was set up to rescue, not reinvent. If you look at the US or Denmark you can see that craft beer appreciation and home brewing are very closely related.

I think there will be difficulties in the future in deciding when Beoir puts its ICB hat on and goes out to promote home brewing, but I really think it's the best option.

Besides, you don't want to have to visit two separate message boards, do you?

I know home brew and craft beer are closely related but I still think there is a parallel with CAMRA with respect to the paucity of beer selection/loss of cask that was their fear.Granted we are now at that feared outcome, even without tied houses(amazing and very sad really).
As to the U.S and Denmark yes there is a clear link between home and craft brewing but I do wonder if that link will be appreciated in an Irish beer consumers group. "ah sure what would yis know, you brew that shite in the bath" sort of thing

Thats the biggest issue I think there will be re. credibility.(see above) So how easy will it be to balance if beoir needs to go solo, where does the homebrew front go?back to ICB?
