Yes, a good many of the breweries seemed to be just part of an overall business, and I even got that impression from Lewis. I think many distillaries ran brewing concerns too, along with malt houses.

That list from Riordan is a bit flawed I think though, simply based on other reading I've been doing that mention breweries that seem to have been in operation in that period that he does not list. Still, it's an interesting snapshot in time.

I only recall Deasy's now that you mention the Wrassler's XXXX

I feel a database coming on...

there is an architects office in a building called 'The Mash House' on Distillery Road in Dublin 3 (just off Clonliffe Avenue) if that information is of any use

Actually, I was going to do a search of a roads database to find all occurances of brewery, distillary, and related names exactly for that reason. Definitely some clues to be found in street names!

But building names like that... well, perfect!(although a mash house on Distillary Road suggests, ehh, distillary But as we discussed above, the beer and whisky were very closely linked)

So, just finished getting my Lewis (1837) entries into a database, so I can start trying to map them now. I have 98 entries, but some refer to multiple breweries, like Dublin County having over 20, and Belfast having 12.

My favourite brewing-related entry so far must be about Waterford City:
"There is a small establishment for rectifying spirits; and public breweries have been established and brought to such perfection as to supersede the necessity of any importation from England; they are conducted upon a scale affording the means of a considerable export of beer to Newfoundland, and latterly to England, which trade is progressively increasing."

I was out there this morning...turns out we actually did a job there before

(in my defence it wasn't known as The Mash House when the project was ongoing)
