This might be of some interest to people here.

The consolidation of Irish breweries by Guinness etc was replicated in Victoria. A local craft brewer was trying to take control of defunct local brands but Carlton & United Brewers (brewers of VB among other things)claimed that these still had a residual value even though they may not have been used for some time.

Identifying old breweries is very important but has there been much success in locating old recipe books? I ask because I'm particularly interested in Thomas Murphy's brewery in Clonmel and (on the foot of this thread) got in touch with the Tipp library to see if any archives survived. It seems not unfortunately. I'm taking a wild guess that Bulmers might have them but I thing there was a gap of about a decade after Murphy's closed and before Bulmers began operations so I'm not particularly hopeful.

Incidentally the location of the Brewery is still standing. It is not apartments and the local dole office.

I think the local archives is the best hope for these sorts of things. AxBrew had great success[/url:3bhvg5q2] in getting Perry's log books in Laois County archives. Both the Murphy's and Beamish ones are accessible in Cork.

From talking to the Guinness archivist, what happened wasn't really consolidation: big breweries tended not to buy smaller breweries out. The smaller breweries would fail, or be forced to change their business and [i:3bhvg5q2]then[/i:3bhvg5q2] fail, and sometimes the bigger brewery would buy their property, but it generally wouldn't take over the company so wouldn't inherit the company documents.

Where they taking over the property in order to set up their own brewing operation in these places or did they just want to prevent anyone else buying the property and setting up?

I didn't go into that with her, but it seems to have been both. O'Connell's Phoenix Brewery was bought and expanded into, whereas with Sweetman's (now the Iveagh Market) it was just a case of salting the earth: they didn't want the site, but didn't want anyone else to brew on it either. AFAIK Guinness had no involvement at all in the failure, sale and demolition of D'Arcy's Anchor Brewery just down the street from them, now the Oliver Bond flats.
