As I said to my pal I was drinking with... why not just make a drink that's nice?! Or at least something more akin to what it used to be like. Foreign Extra on tap even.

That is how our conversation progresed actually. My friend admitted to "not liking stout but liking Guinness".

The mid-strength was weird anyway. There was a kind of metallic flavour to it or something and it was served at a relatively warm temperature which is of course a big shock considering how ice cold you usually get beers in many places.

Who is this drink supposed to be marketed at? The boyos that go out to get skulled out of their mallet ain't going to want a beer that won't get them drunker any faster. The aul lads who fall asleep into the same three hr old pint of Guinness in their local boozer will hardly want to switch at this stage.

Is it just some sort of "hey look at us we're being considerate and offering a drink aware product not designed to get you mangoed"?

I love stout. It's complexity can put other styles to shame. It has to be one of the most diverse options available to the home brewer.

I was brought back a couple of bottle of Old Rasputin Imperial Stout a few years ago. I thought it was amazing. Check out how many awards it has won

Gold medals -

2005 World Beer Championships, Chicago
2004 World Beer Championships, Chicago
2004 Spring Beer & Wine Fest, Portland

Wowzers.

Has anybody tried the porterhouse celebration stout. Seems to be in a smaller bottle and the have reduced the abv from 10% to 7%. Thats bound to make a huge difference from the original which was delicious

It's pretty good: reminds me a lot of draught Wrasslers. I recall the original Celebration being quite bitter when it was first released so it could be worth laying a few of these down for a year or two.
