Here is a hypothetical situation.

Ballynopub has not had a local watering hole since the landlord of O'Culchies retired and sold the licence to Megamarket (Ireland) Ltd, so they could have an off-licence, in their 35th Dublin Store.[/quote:vi6h5xm2]

I believe that there's a clause in there that says that you can't set up a club for the purposes of getting a club licence so you can have drinks in said club.

You have to have have a proper club engaged in whatever activity they're supposed to be about, be it yachting or athletics or Gah or whatever.

I'm not sure that you couldn't have the Ballynopub Tiddlywinks Association or some such though, for years there's been one loophole or another to get around some of the more farcical aspects of the licencing laws.

Though I do know that in practice that the signing in of members in club bars isn't usually strictly enforced, there seems to be a fairly liberal attitude to it, but the Gardai can use it to make sure the club bars "stay in line" if they feel the need.

What if it was a Ballynopub Residents' Social Club? A club where Ballynopub could socialise.

In fairness, someone would have to be employed anyway. Bar staff and or cleaning staff.

Actually, when you think about it, you could do a lot of good for a community with that club idea. As the profits are not going into anyone's pocket, they could use the money to improve the club, run functions, take members on subsidised trips, or undertake projects to benefit the community.

Not sure if Irish people would do it though. Probably sounds a bit to much like communism and then they wouldn't be able to whine and wring their hands about the decline of rural Ireland.

What about the Ballynopub Community Anticommunist League Incorporating the Noastalgic Whingers Society of Ballynopub? Could work
