You have to have have a proper club engaged in whatever activity they're supposed to be about, be it yachting or athletics or Gah or whatever.

Did a bit more digging on the subject and seems that the going rate for a pub licence is still between €165,000 and €180,000 and that it's essentially a tradeable commodity that you must buy if you want to open a pub.

I'm learning loads! <!-- s:o --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_surprised.gif" alt=":o" title="Surprised" /><!-- s:o -->

As the profits are not going into anyone's pocket, they could use the money to improve the club, run functions, take members on subsidised trips, or undertake projects to benefit the community.

Not sure if Irish people would do it though. Probably sounds a bit to much like communism and then they wouldn't be able to whine and wring their hands about the decline of rural Ireland.[/quote:3ud03r1b]

But it is being done in the aforementioned soccer/rowing/GAA/yacht clubs etc.
I don't think TBN's utopian vision of everybody doing their bit would work though. You would have to employ a bar manager type figure, but that wage should pay for itself.

Yes but the The Ballynopub Pool, Darts and Cards Club doesn't need one of those, as it is a private memebers club.

They could also stay open as long as they like.

Edit: that was referring to

I agree, a pub manager would have to be employed to keep the whole thing ticking along.

Or a working men's club? <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

I recall being in one in Sligo many years ago (at least I think it was a working mens club). They had a little bar and a pool table. You did feel like you had to give a secret knock on the door though. It was great!
