TOPIC:

What defines a great brewery? 16 years 2 months ago #1

I somehow have this feeling that there's no such thing as a great brewery, but there are breweries that produce some great beers.

What do you think defines a great brewery?

I don't think there's any such thing. It's a recipe for giving undue to credit to old breweries who make crap beer just because they've survived long enough, IMO.

Many new(ish) breweries are called great, so it's not just limited to "traditional" (heheheh) breweries. I can see where you're coming from though, especially from the non-beer geek perspective.

What about from a total beer geek's perspective?

For me (a semi-geek, I suppose you might say) a great brewery is one that consistently produces great beers, and makes producing great beers their number one priority. And also all the usual stuff that would make any company "great" - well run, good working conditions, ethical supply sourcing etc. etc.

Don't really know enough about any brewery to decide if they qualify to be called "great", but if they do all the above I don't think you can really argue with them being called great, can you?

Have you been watching answers to my question on Twitter? Some parallel thoughts developing!

Well, great minds [i:35np8vxv]do[/i:35np8vxv] think alike you know. Although equally fools seldom differ - who is it I'm after accidentally agreeing with? Should I be distancing myself from what I just said
