I dont think their is much in the way of great breweries anymore, macro breweries anyway. They're all large companies and like any large company they are run in such a way that bening great is unachievable as they main aim of the game in profits up and expenses down

Well I think that we'd more than likely be looking at smaller breweries - Brooklyn Brewery's founders paint themselves in a very nice light in their book, and Brooklyn Lager is certainly (for me, at least) a great beer. Haven't had any of their other beers, and I don't know all that much about them beyond what they've said themselves, but they'd be the kind of company I'd be looking at if I was trying to find a brewery you could really call "great". Not a massive multi-national, but also not a really tiny micro, which I'm not sure you could call great either (you need to be able to get your beer to a wide audience).

I'd go with any brewery that still adheres to the reinheitsgebot.

well, the beauty, ethos and charm of the brewery must be surely taken into account. Making great beer is a prerequisite of course, but I would think of Rochefort for the sheer beauty of its engine room <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a...007_Luca_Galuzzi.jpg">upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... aluzzi.jpg , Cantillon because the place is so charming and quirky, I'm sure there are many others, and many reasons.
