Price competition in the pubs is a two-edged weapon. Yeah, you can price your pints lower than the pub down the street, but you're not going to beat the price at an off-licence (package store in US parlance). Get your customers too focused on price and they'll stop at the off-licence on the way home, get pissed on the cheap, and never come by your empty establishment at all.

Wetherspoon's don't seem to have trouble attracting certain section of select clients

Weatherspoons selling Greene King IPA at 99p? Well are Weatherspoons or the parent Co. of Greene King (whoever that may be nowadays) making any profit on this? An educated guess would say they are selling it as a loss leader which is not good for small breweries, of which there are many in the UK. This seems a bit hypocritical of Weatherspoons who have often promoted themselves as a friend of ‘Real Beer’

Can it happen in Ireland? ---- No competition ---- No need.

Incidentally I was in posh pricy Surrey last week and visited a few pubs (or were they restaurants serving beer? I’m not sure any more) paid around £3.30 a pint worth every penny. Came back through Dublin airport en-route to Knock and paid €5.10 for a pint of yellow ******

Not all Weatherspoons are doing this offer and they are not getting any sub of Greene King , but Greene King apparently aren't to happy with this promotion

Yeah, but it's Greene King. Hardly a tiny brewery. And they're hardly the most ethical company either. I sai screw them.

They probably are probably afraid of their beer going the way of Stella.

Inbev originally positioned Stella as a premium product (remember the line "Reassuringly Expensive"?) but supermarkets started loss leading it to get the customers in. Next thing you know: Wifebeater.
